Advertising and Promotion 1973 to 1982
I began my career in advertising, providing layout and design work for area businesses.
I moved into media buying and promotional event planning. Clients included: The Harbor Inn, Grand Haven, MI The Thunder Chicken Rock Theater and the Thunderbird Dinner Theater, Grand Rapids, MI The Onion Crock Restaurants a Grand Rapids based franchise
In 1978 I took a position with the Taubman Company. I provided promotion coordination for mall activities.
In 1980 I took on private clients providing advertising and promotion direction for May’s of Michigan, Grand Rapids, MI Henry’s of Wichita, Wichita, KS, The Sound Room, Classic Stereo, West Michigan Spring and Wire, Shiefler Tool Corporation among many other West Michigan area retailers and industrial companies.
Event Production and Product Introduction Support 1982
After chairing the entertainment committee for the opening of the Grand Center in downtown Grand Rapids and working on several promotions through the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce I was asked to assist with the coordination of the grand opening events of the Steelcase world headquarters. That same year I chaired two committees for the opening celebration of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum. I remained a committee chairperson on subsequent events for President Ford. I stayed at Steelcase until 1987 in the Corporate Communications Department working in product introductions from concept to delivery, marketing event management, public relations and managing the Frank Lloyd Wright traveling displays.
From 1987 through 1990 I worked for various furniture companies providing sales and marketing support and event planning. Clients included; Shaw Walker, Westinghouse, Widdicomb, Baker Furniture.
In 1991 I began a two year stint at Scientific Atlanta helping bring a new line of desk top telecommunications products to the market. Also assisted with the sale of distance learning products and software to the Department of the Navy and worked with various legislators in Washington to get legislation passed to open up the internet for telecommunications capacity and capability.
Public Affairs Counsel
In 1993 I moved into the area of Public Affairs focusing mostly on real estate development work. I handled appeals before planning and zoning commissions, developing marketing pro formas and produced sales videos. Clients included: Medallion Management, Kalamazoo, MI DeVries Development, Tol Realty, Paramount Properties, Grooters Development, Blue Bridge Ventures, all of Grand Rapids.
Entertainment Management, Marketing and production
In the early 70’s I started to manage local artists. One group, Natchez Trace, enjoyed local and regional fame. I worked on various tours for a while but chose to return to Grand Rapids in the late 70’s. 1999 I became Vice President of Chrysler Audio. The company was formed by myself and Bill Chrysler. We supplied audio equipment and personnel to touring artists, regional and local events and provided production services for community and corporate events. Clients included Christina Aguilera, Queen Latiffa, Jennifer Lopez, Kenny Chesney, Bishop T.D. Jakes as well as major events, like the World Party 2000 event at Van Andel Arena, The Grand Rapids Hoops Basketball Team, Berlin Raceway, Walker Fest, The Calder Festival and many more.
Political Campaign Management and Communications
I started working on campaigns in the late 70’s. I primarily used my advertising background to create literature. I wrote, did the layout and produced literature pieces for local, state and national candidates. I later included video and film work was well as radio spot production. In the 80’s I began co-managing and managing campaigns. I am still active as a campaign consultant.
In 2009 I began work as Chief of Staff for a State Representative. I directed our staff and interns and provide assistance on critical constituent issues and directed major legislative initiatives.
